Free NASC adapters for certain Kia vehicle owners

• Kia will offer free NACS adapters to certain owners of their electric vehicles.

For a little over a year, we have seen the majority of manufacturers announce that they will opt for the NACS (North American Charging Standard) charging standard from Tesla, rather than the CCS (Combined Charging System) still used by most current electric vehicles.

This move will give owners of vehicles from other brands access to thousands of Tesla charging stations.

In most cases, vehicles manufactured from 2025 onwards will come from the factory with the NACS port. Until then, to use Tesla charging stations, an adapter is required. Ford initially offered it for free, and more recently General Motors offered it to owners of its vehicles for a few hundred dollars.

Now Kia has announced its own adapter. This adapter will be provided for free to certain customers.

To get a free adapter, people must have purchased their new Kia EV9 or Kia EV6 after September 4, 2024. The offer applies to 2024 EV6 models, as well as the 2024 and 2025 EV9 models. These free adapters will be sent to customers at the beginning of 2025. The company specified that access to Tesla stations will be possible starting from January 15, 2025.

Owners of the Kia EV9, EV6, and Niro EV who purchased their vehicle before September 4 can obtain the adapter from a Kia dealership. The specific timing for when this will be available has not been specified.

Kia will offer three types of NACS adapters:

• The first (NACS to CCS) will allow current Kia electric vehicles to use fast-charging DC chargers of the NACS standard, which are expected to be deployed in the United States starting next year, as well as existing Tesla chargers.
• The second (CCS to NACS) will allow future Kia electric vehicles, equipped with the NACS port, to charge on fast chargers with the CCS port currently found on stations operated by organizations such as Electrify Canada.
• Finally, a third adapter (J1772 to NACS) will allow owners of Kia electric vehicles equipped with the NACS port to charge on level 2 AC charging stations.

We have contacted Kia Canada to find out if the terms and dates announced for the implementation of the new standard will be the same here. For now, the company’s response is simple: the details are not yet finalized for Canada. This suggests that preparations are being made and details will be announced soon.
